United Biscuits, a British multinational with many leading brands in the baked products category including McVitie’s biscuits, Phileas Fogg snacks, and Jacob’s Cream Crackers, amongst others is serious in their commitment to lowering saturated fat. The company has invested over $8.5 million to reformulate their popular McVitie’s biscuit.
Major brand products such as McVitie’s biscuits face tremendous risk when changing their products. United Biscuits along with other responsible food companies should be commended and supported for taking the risk and rising to challenge … these companies are putting billions on the line in brand equity.
Coasun Inc. continues to work with responsible food companies that are challenged to dramatically reduce saturated fat in baked products. The UK Food Standards Agency affiliate website says: http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/healthydiet/fss/fats/satfat/ say:
- Most people in the UK eat too much saturated fat – about 20% more than the recommended maximum amount.
- The average man should have no more than 30g saturated fat a day.
- The average woman should have no more than 20g saturated fat a day.
The FSA also says:
“Diet is a key risk factor in heart disease and it is estimated that cutting our intake of saturated fat could prevent up to 3,500 premature deaths a year [in the UK], saving the UK economy more than £1 billion a year in related costs,” said the agency in February.
